Domain Name Values
Domains by definition are one of a kind, but so is the art your child made for you. Most all agree that short is best, but I think a searched term is very important as well. Words of course tend to have good value, at least common words, so really long words that are rarely used dont have much value. Of course short words that gets searches just dont drop that often, and if they do they tend to go through a drop catching service.
What you are planning for the domain matters a great deal as well. You just looking for one name for your website, or are you looking for several to start “playing” with the domain name business, it matters. I sell domains and look for dropping domains everyday. Its not hard to find decent names you can register. If you have a term/product in mind it gets tougher. So how to start with your term, first I would look for the term you want, what would you search for? Likely taken, so plan b. Next I would look for terms close to that term.
Let me back up just a little here. First I only deal in .coms, just what I prefer, and while that is changing some .coms are what I like. I also try to stick with just exact match searched terms, you can see my list at www.afternic.com/profile/brooksprings . Most all are searched terms, all are .coms, I try for short when able. Its a mixed bag with very different values/prices. (lol feel free to buy them). You can also send offers if you want. One thing about domains there are some large spreads on what some will take, some people are firm on their price, and some will take much less.
Forgive me, but I’m trying to write this for two groups of people, one looking for their name, and others wanting to start buying domains to resell domains. I still love looking for domains, selling them is the tougher part, and know several people that have gone broke buying names. I backed into domains over 20 years ago, and still like it but it has changed, so have prices.
So for either group, the starting point is the same. Lets say you want to get a name for widgets, well that is taken of course. Next you have to find what terms people search for when searching for widgets. And often there are synonyms for the term, and are searching for widgets that have nothing to do with the type you want to talk about or sell.
I’ll need to finish later.
